Salt flats in Vargas beach in Gran Canaria

Vargas Beach

Natural coast of Playa de Vargas

Playa de Vargas is an isolated coastal area with low occupancy in the southeast of Gran Canaria, within the municipality of Agüimes. It is not an urban beach or a conventional tourist destination, but a natural environment, open and windy, closely linked to the sea, the salt flats and wind sports.

Vargas beach combines Callaos on the outside and a few meters of sand towards the interior. It has an approximate length of 1,300 meters and about 15 meters wide, although in September it can gain more sand and width from low tides. It usually presents moderate waves and strong winds.

Due to its wind and wave conditions, Playa de Vargas is especially known among those who practice windsurfing and kitesurfing. It has established itself as one of the outstanding beaches for radical windsurfing and has hosted tests linked to the international wave circuit.

On the coast of Playa de Vargas there are Langoster houses and Casa Salinero, both in the natural environment of the Salinas de Bocacangrejo. Las Salinas are still in operation and are part of the landscape and the local heritage, as a souvenir of a craft activity linked to the economy of this coastal area for centuries.

It is a place for those who seek tranquility, nature and sea, far from mass tourism. It is not a leisure area, commercial walk or tourist services on foot from the accommodation. The nearby population for shopping, restaurants, pharmacy and other services is Carrizal, a few minutes by car.

From Playa de Vargas you can also Explore the coast of Agüimes, with other nearby points such as Playa de El Burrero, Arinaga, Playa del Cabrón, Agüimes or the Guayadeque ravine.
